An item of interest provided by Margenon is that Sarah Marchant charged Robert Hiscock of Etchingham, labourer, on March 29th 1791 at the Salehurst parish Quarter Sessions as being the father of her child. The identity of the child is unknown.

Occupation: Labourer at time of daughter Phillis`s marriage; (Agricultural labourer in 1841 census).

Death: 1849 age 80; Burial: 30 August in Etchingham.

Sarah Marchant (married to Robert)

Birth: uncertain: possibly 1772 (The nearest Marganon could get is a Sarah MERCHANT baptised on 17.5.1772 at Brightling, daughter of John and Anne. Brightling is only about 5 miles from Etchingham where she married.There are lots of Marchants and Merchants in East Sussex,but she may well have been baptised in Kent.).

Note from Marganon: There is a problem with her baptism. There is a largish family of Freelands in Etchingham, but no Philly; but there is a Polly Freeland baptised on 25.6.1786, one of the children of Henry & Elizabeth Freeland, which would make her 20 at her marriage.

Everenden Hiscock (In some places spelt Evenden)
Uncertainty over this next entry. Much of the information comes from Mandy Willard I have not been able to verify all the details; but if the mother was Ann Noakes, there seems a reasonable probability that Everenden belongs to this family.

Birth: 1782; Christening 07 Sep 1782 at Salehurst, Sussex; father's name: "Joshua" Hiscock; mother's name: Anne Noakes; IGI batch number: C14841-2
Marganon makes some admirable suggestions:-
It looks as though either the father`s name was transcribed incorrectly, or the vicar/curate put the wrong name down, or Robert couldn't be there and Robert`s brother Joshua went with Ann to the church. They were possibly illiterate so wouldn't know what was written down.

Marriage by banns on 14 October 1810 in Wadhurst to Fanny Moren, who was born on 19 March and baptised on 14 April 1793 in Wadhurst.
Evenden signed his name whilst Fanny made her X mark.
The witnesses to the marriage were Charles Moren and John Cooper who both signed their names. Charles's signature looks pretty much like that of the cousin Charles Moren who married Harriet Hunt on 19 August 1810 in Wadhurst.

When the 1841 census was recorded Evenden and Fanny were living at White Gates in Wadhurst along with 2 servants, (Albert Kitchenham and Elizabeth Pack) who were both said to be 15 years old, but their ages had probably been rounded down. Evenden was then a farmer. By the time of the 1851 census the couple were living at Sparrows Green in Wadhurst and he was a yeoman. They were living in Sparrows Green Road by the time of the 1861 census and Evenden was a retired farmer.
