The marriage certificate in 1917 for Thomas James Leaford and Lilian May, formerly Smith, gives the parent as George Smith, a Warehouse Man. George is entered as a Boot Salesman on Lilian May`s birth certificate, and the mother as Ann Caroline, formerly Hill. The 1901 census also corresponds with George as a Boot Salesman, and Ann Caroline and recently born Victor as in the household with Lilian May. For extra confirmation I have Victor`s birth and marriage certificate.
Also certified is the marriage between George Smith and Ann Caroline Hill in 1889, in West Ham. George and his wife were difficult to trace in the 1891 census owing to the mistranscription of George as Geoge, and Anne preferring to be called Annie.
George`s father was also George (Great Great Grandfather), who had married Elizabeth Cordelia Tourell in 1864, when his occupation was described as porter. In 1866 on the birth of George junior his occupation was given as Leather cutter journeyman; and at the 1881 census as shoemaker. At his marriage, his father was named as James William Smith, a weaver, whose address in the 1861 census was the same as that given for George on his marriage certificate -25 Booth Street, Spitalfields . His address in 1851 had been in Brick Lane.
Rosemary King, Great-Great Granddaughter of Sarah Smith and Henry Rand, had found a baptism for George; he had been born 27 Oct 1843. Rosemary was also able to add further information on a number of the early relatives back as far as 1776 (James Smith and Esther Browell) which I included in the Smith chart.
The 1881 and 1891 census records for the George (Senior)/Elizabeth family seem consistent. The family were living at 79 Victoria Dock Road. Two further daughters had been born since 1881 before the marriage of George Junior. The 1871 census record shows strong coincidences, but sufficient variations in the ages shown to make identification difficult.
A difficult investigation was then amazingly clarified by the researches of Paul Fiddian, who
had married a grand-daughter of Lilian May (1895-1978)
His discoveries went back to the 16th century and produced a whole new Brief Chart page in this website.
His own website can be found at this link.
I have taken the liberty of showing a copy of his history of the family on a separate
Note.
